Understanding your treatment
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the dental specialty that diagnoses, prevents and corrects problems in the position of the teeth and in the way the upper and lower jaws fit together. These problems are known as malocclusion.
It is not only about a straighter smile. Well-aligned teeth are easier to clean, share chewing forces more evenly and support balanced facial proportions. Orthodontic treatment is possible for children, teens and adults.
Orthodontics can help with
- Crowded or crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite, underbite and crossbite
- An open bite, or a bite that does not close properly
- Teeth that are hard to clean or wear unevenly
Guiding growth
What is maxillofacial orthopedics?
Maxillofacial orthopedics guides the growth of the jaws and facial bones while a child is still growing. Orthodontics moves the teeth; orthopedics works on the bone base that supports them.
With removable or fixed appliances, such as palatal expanders and functional appliances, the orthodontist can help the upper and lower jaws grow in better proportion and create room for the permanent teeth. In some cases this can make later treatment simpler, although every child responds differently.
Timing matters. Orthodontic associations, such as the American Association of Orthodontists, recommend a first check-up around age 7, so growth can be guided at the right moment.
Often considered for
- A narrow upper jaw or a crossbite
- Upper and lower jaws that do not match in size or position
- Crowding caused by lack of space
- Habits that can affect growth, such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing
- Children and teens who are still growing
Jaw joint care
TMJ treatment
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ, or ATM in Spanish) connects your lower jaw to your skull, one joint on each side of your face. When the joint or the muscles around it are overloaded or out of balance, it is called a temporomandibular disorder.
The cause is often a combination of factors, such as teeth grinding or clenching, a bite problem, muscle tension, stress or a past injury. That is why the first step is a careful evaluation, not a standard treatment.
Our evaluation includes:
- Imaging with X-rays or a CT scan (tomography)
- Palpation and examination of the joint and the muscles
- An intraoral scan to study how your bite works in motion (dynamic occlusion)
- An in-depth review of habits that may trigger or keep the problem going
With the results, your orthodontist explains what is happening and which treatment options fit your case.
Occlusal splints
One of our main tools is the occlusal splint, an appliance worn over the teeth that protects them and lets the jaw joint and muscles relax. A splint and a night guard are the same thing, but there are several subtypes. Your orthodontist chooses the one that matches your diagnosis, so it treats the actual cause of the problem.
Splints can help relieve:
- Bruxism: grinding or clenching your teeth
- Bite (occlusion) problems
- Joint problems in the TMJ
- Muscle problems and muscle fatigue in the jaw and face
- Subluxation or dislocation of the jaw: the jaw joint slips partly out of place (subluxation) or completely out of place (dislocation), and the jaw may get stuck
If you need care from another professional, we refer you.
These symptoms can have other causes. Only an examination can tell what is behind them.
Possible signs
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Clicking, popping or grating when you open or close
- Difficulty opening wide, or a jaw that feels stuck
- Frequent headaches or pain around the ear and face
- Worn teeth, or a tight jaw when you wake up
Braces and aligners: what is the difference?
There is no single best option. The right choice depends on your diagnosis, your goals, your lifestyle and your budget. Here is how the four main options compare.

Metal braces
Traditional stainless steel brackets bonded to the teeth and joined by an archwire, held in place with small elastic ties. Durable and well established.

Self-ligating braces
Metal brackets with a built-in clip or sliding door that holds the archwire, so no elastic ties are needed. Compact and smooth.

Aesthetic self-ligating braces
Self-ligating brackets with a tooth-colored, translucent body that blends in with your teeth, so they are much less noticeable than metal.

Clear aligners
A series of custom-made, transparent, removable trays that work as a substitute for braces. Each tray moves your teeth a little, following a digital treatment plan.

Orthodontics FAQ
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
It depends on each case: the type of correction, your age and how closely the plan is followed. After your diagnosis, your orthodontist will explain the expected timeline.
Is orthodontics only for teenagers?
No. Orthodontic treatment can be done at different ages. During your consultation we evaluate what is appropriate for you or for your child.
What is the difference between braces and clear aligners?
Braces are fixed to your teeth and work all day, every day. Aligners are removable trays that you wear 22 hours a day and take out only to eat and to clean. Both can be effective; the best option depends on your diagnosis and on how you will follow the plan.
When should my child have a first orthodontic check-up?
Orthodontic associations recommend a first evaluation around age 7. It does not mean treatment starts then. It lets the orthodontist watch growth and act at the right moment if needed.
Can orthodontics help with jaw pain or TMJ problems?
Sometimes. If the bite is contributing to the problem, orthodontic correction can be part of the solution, but jaw joint problems have several possible causes. We start with an evaluation to decide the right approach.
How much do braces or clear aligners cost?
The cost depends on the diagnosis and the treatment you choose. We explain the options and give you a clear estimate at your consultation.
